WAUSAU, Wis. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin utility regulators are taking public comments on a proposed new biomass power plant south of Wausau. We Energies wants to build a 50-megawatt plant that would turn woodwaste and other biomass into electricity. It would also provide steam to the nearby Domtar paper mill in Rothschild.
The Public Service Commission will hold hearings later this year before deciding whether to approve the plant. But for now, the PSC is taking public comments until June first on its Web site accessible at Wisconsin.Gov. The commission says its decision will hinge in part on whether enough woodwastes and related debris can be available – and if it can be harvested without hurting the environment. The plant would need about a half-million tons of fuel each year.
