WAUSAU, Wis. (WTAQ) - A judge in Wausau has said no to a shorter prison sentence for a woman who was sleeping off a methamphetamine rush while her 6-month-old baby died.
28-year-old Jessica Kasten is serving a 7 year term for felony child neglect. She told Marathon County Circuit Judge Patrick Brady that she cannot take part in certain treatment programs because others with earlier release dates get in first.
Brady said Kasten was not eligible for the early release provision in last year’s state budget. She has only served 29 percent of her sentence, and she cannot apply until she has served 85 percent. Kasten’s child died in April of 2007. She told police she slept for 18 hours after getting high on methamphetamine – and her baby son was not breathing when she woke up.
