WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Wausau police say they won't issue any citations in the case of a car towed away as abandoned that had cremated human remains inside. They DO say proper procedures were not followed when the car was towed, junked, and crushed for scrap. The remains of the car owners father and grandfather appear lost forever.
The apartment manager where the car was parked thought the vehicle was abandoned. He called police, and was told that they would try to locate the owner.
Under normal procedures for towing abandoned vehicles, the car needs to be ticketed. It can sold or scrapped after 20 days. The towing company, Hilltop Auto, says they were contacted by the property manager where the vehicle was parked. The car was crushed for scrap the next day.
The owner of the car, Shawn Leslie, says he had permission to keep his car there from a business owner who uses the parking lot. He's considering a civil lawsuit.
