Federal assessment of flood damage expected next week

UNDATED (WSAU) State officials want the federal government to assess flood damage next week, to see if disaster aid could be available to fix roads and other public facilities.

Wisconsin Emergency Management says the public sector damage from the recent rains-and-floods surpassed $9-million yesterday. And the damage is still being tallied, while some spots remain underwater. Officials said 421 homes had flood damage as of yesterday, as well as 62 businesses. Eight businesses had major damage, and three homes were destroyed.

The only significant flooding today is on the Mississippi River. It was a half-foot over its banks at La Crosse at two this morning. And it was still three-point-one feet above its flood stage at McGregor, Iowa near Prairie du Chien.

The Wisconsin River at Muscoda returned to its flood stage overnight. And the state D-O-T said the Merrimac Ferry went back on-line yesterday.

Rain is in the forecast throughout Wisconsin today, and it’s supposed to taper off tonight. It’s already cooled down – and highs are expected to be in the 40’s-and-50’s during the weekend.
