MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Republican candidate for governor won't say if he'd support a ban on embryonic stem cell research in Wisconsin and the Democrat in the race is firing back.
During a stop in Madison Tuesday, Scott Walker avoided questions from reporters on the issue, saying only that he would push funding for research that uses adult stem cells.
"I'm going to put the focus, I'm going to put the money behind adult stem cell [research], not embryonic," Walker said.
Walker believes the research with adult stem cells is more promising for medical advances. However, Democratic opponent Tom Barrett disagrees.
"The misrepresentation is really Scott Walker's continued, phony claim that embryonic stem cell research doesn't matter -- or that the same breakthroughs can be achieved through adult stem cells," Barrett said.
Barrett says Walker's position could damage a growing industry in the state, putting it out of business.
