Spain's opposition keep 10 point lead over government: poll

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's right-wing Popular Party (PP) is maintaining its 10-point lead over the ruling Socialists, according to an official poll published on Friday.

The state-owned Center for Sociological Studies said the PP would get 43.8 percent of the vote against the Socialists 33.4 percent.

The poll, carried out from April 1 to 8, just after Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced he would seek a third turn in power.

Zapatero's popularity has been hit by the euro zone's highest jobless rate and a lackluster recovery from a crippling financial crisis. His party is expected to lose to the PP in elections next year.

However, a poll in center-right newspaper El Mundo on April 10 indicated that the decision not to stand had halved the PP's lead over the Socialists.

The last poll published by CIS gave the PP a 10.1 point lead over the Socialists.
