WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau's park and rec committee will meet tonight on possibly banning dogs from the 400 Block.
The city recently put leash laws into place across the city and park system, but complaints from residents and people that use the 400 block prompted another look at policies. There are concerns that people aren't cleaning up after their animals on the block and that urination in the grass could harm the look of the new park.
The new leash law requires owners to have their animals on a six-foot or shorter leash at all times. Leashes can be up to 16 feet long if the animal and its owner are in a park. Owners don't need leashes if the animal is in a car or in an officially designated off-leash area in a park.
Supporters said several residents had asked for the change and the stricter leash law will protect animals from dogs who are off-leash. But critics said the change penalizes good dog owners who can responsibly control their dogs off-leash.
Tonight's meeting starts at 5:30 in the city council chambers.
