Kohl pushes for more food safety inspectors

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) – Senator Herb Kohl wants to make sure that the food you eat is safe.

The Democratic lawmaker highlighted his plans to promote and improve food safety during a visit Monday to the Ocean Spray cranberry company in Wisconsin Rapids.

Kohl chairs the Senate agriculture appropriations subcommittee which has oversight of the Food and Drug Administration. Since 2008, he has increased funding for the FDA by nearly 60 percent, with most of the money directed toward improving food safety.

“For the most part we do a good job of seeing that the American people eat is safe,” he said.

Kohl said he will push for even more funding before he leaves office next year. He said wants the FDA to increase the number of food safety inspectors in the U.S. and overseas and to develop new regional, rapid response teams across the country to identify and isolate contaminated produce at its source.

But, “If we're not careful, if we don't inspect and regulate and stay vigilant, then you get in trouble,” Kohl said.
