BadgerCare still open for children, familes, pregnant women

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Badger-Care has not cut off all new enrollments.

The Madison group ABC for Health is trying to get the word out – so it’s been holding information sessions throughout the state.

The latest was Thursday in Green Bay.

The new state budget signed by Republican Governor Scott Walker freezes enrollments for childless adults who apply for both Badger Care Plus and a bare-bones plan serving those on a waiting list for the full program.

But Brynne McBride of ABC for Health says Badger Care is still open to children, families, and pregnant women. She says people hear that the state’s health care program for the working poor has stopped signing up certain groups of people – and they wrongly assume that everyone’s been cut off.

Stephanie Smiley of the state Health Services Department says enrollments have gone up since the start of 2011 – and the total numbers of those served are holding steady.

ABC for Health director Bobby Peterson says his group is also encouraging those already in Badger-Care to keep their coverage going. He says people are dropping out of the program all the time, and they shouldn’t.
