Unions file lawsuit over unpaid furlough days

by

MADISON (WSAU) A union that represents 22,000 state employees wants to be paid for six-of-the-16 furlough days they took in the past two years. The State Employees Union has filed a lawsuit in Dane County, saying it’s not fair that their members were docked for all 16 days – while the Walker administration allowed prosecutors to have only 10 days of unpaid furloughs.

The Assistant District Attorneys’ union had the maximum of 10 days in their contract, saying they took furloughs in previous years when other state employees had not. But the attorney for the State Employees Union, Peg Lautenschlager, said it didn’t make any difference what was done in the past. She also said six other state unions had clauses allowing their members to get paid for furlough days if any other union got the same deal.

Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch said the so-called “me too” clauses cost taxpayers an extra $11-million. The State Employees’ Union did not have such a clause. The administration is not commenting on the new lawsuit.
