STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) A drunk driver crashed into the Stevens Point Christmas tree on Mathias Mitchell Square. The incident happened last Saturday around 1130pm.

21-year-old Cheyne Wakeley of Berlin drove through a stop sign and hit a concrete wall on the square before crashing into the Christmas tree's base. The tree is mounted inside a fountain, and did not topple over. The fountain's base was cracked, and will need to be repaired. That work began on Tuesday.

Wakely is charged with operating while intoxicated and failing to obey a stop sign. He was taken to the hospital to have his blood drawn. Police have not disclosed his blood-alcohol level.
