New York, NY (WSAU) Jae Crowder made a three-pointer with six-point-three seconds left to give the Marquette men a 79-to-77 win over Washington at the Jimmy “V” Classic in New York. The 11th-ranked Golden Eagles are still undefeated at 8-and-0. The game was tied at 75 when Darius Johnson-Odom made one of two free throws with 31 seconds left. Washington made a quick basket which set up Crowder’s game-winning shot. Johnson-Odom led Marquette with 23 points, and Crowder had 18. But the Eagles lost starting center Chris Otule in the first two minutes when he sprained his left knee while trying to grab a loose ball. He did not return.
The game had an extremely fast pace, which Marquette coach Buzz Williams expected. He noted that Washington was the 10th-fastest team in the country, and his squad needed good discipline to execute regardless of how fast the game was moving. Four Huskies scored in double figures, led by Terrence Ross with 19. Aziz N’Diaye had 13 rebounds for Washington, which out-rebounded Marquette 41-to-28. Washington also out-shot the Eagles 48-and-a-half percent to 43-and-a-half. But Marquette took better advantage of mistakes, forcing 16 turnovers while committing just 10
. Washington dropped to 4-and-3. Marquette will host U-W Green Bay on Saturday night. Green Bay plays at Wisconsin tonight, while the Marquette women play at Notre Dame to open their Big East season.
