PHOENIX (Reuters) - An Arizona mother who tried to swap her 2-year-old daughter for a gun was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Wednesday, court officials said.

Tanya Leathers was given the prison time by Maricopa Superior Court Judge Joseph Kreamer under terms of a plea agreement reached in the January 2010 incident and another unrelated crime two months later.

The 35-year-old Mesa, Ariz., resident, also known as Tanya Nareau, pleaded guilty last month to unlawful sale of a child, attempt to commit misconduct involving a firearm and vehicle theft.

Authorities said they were called to Leathers' residence after being alerted to the child-swap by a tip. While there, sheriff's deputies found the girl with a family friend, who confirmed that the exchange had taken place.

Deputies reported that Leathers said she believed the friend would do a better job raising her daughter and that she wanted a gun, but could not purchase one legally. She is a convicted felon.
