WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – The Wausau school board has denied a request from a pair of families to swap property between the Wausau and Marathon School districts.
The request came after Michael and Patricia Zernicke found out in 2010 that their home was located inside the Marathon School District and that they had been sending their children to Wausau schools without paying the district tuition or having an open enrollment agreement. The family got together with Richard and Cheri Parks and proposed a land swap between the two districts.
Board members voted down the motion 5 to 4 last night. President Michelle Schaefer says the move would not have been prudent on the board's part. Schaefer says the district has already denied one request for a change in the border from the Parks Family. “We denied that request last year, and they lost their appeal with the Department of Public Instruction.”
Schaefer says there's already an open enrollment available to parents who want to move their students to other districts in the area. “Really it would have been a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”
Both families will have the option of appealing to the Department of Public Instruction.
