Two killed in plane crash near Grand Canyon

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A rescue crew on Saturday located the bodies of two men in the burned wreckage of a small aircraft that went missing while flying near the Grand Canyon the night before, authorities said.

The single-engine aircraft was found at around 1:30 p.m. local time in the Kaibab National Forest, near Flagstaff, said Coconino County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gerry Blair.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft, a Cirrus SR20, was flying from Rock Hill Airport-Bryant Field in South Carolina to Henderson, Nevada, on Friday.

The pilot's family reported him missing when he failed to arrive in Henderson on Friday night.

The pilot did not communicate with air traffic controllers, and a review of radar data showed the plane disappeared over the Grand Canyon around 9 p.m. Friday, the FAA said.

Blair declined to immediately release the names of the two fliers.
