WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Several Wausau bars and taverns are circulating a petition calling for the city to revise its noise ordinance. That comes after a growing number of bars want to offer outdoor entertainment, but have sometimes met resistance from neighbors.
The petition was started at The Hiawatha on the east side. They have a permit for outdoor entertainment, but neighbors have complained. The bar is approved only for unamplified music; and many bands won’t play without a sound system.
Wausau’s noise ordinance is vague; it doesn’t include specific decibel levels that would lead to a violation. The bar and tavern owners says that leads to judgment calls from police and gives noise complaints from neighbors too much weight in the process.
The city is considering a revised ordinance. They will review the issue at the June 14th City Council meeting.
