WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau, Everest Metro and Merrill police are all investigating who is passing counterfeit money in their communities.
Wausau police Lieutenant Bill Kolb says that the crooks are taking photocopied 20 dollar bills to local rummage sales, buying something with the bill, and getting real change in return. “It's not until the person having the sale goes to deposit the money that they're aware of the bill being counterfeit.”
Kolb does says there are ways to tell if a bill is genuine. “Typically the counterfeit money has a different feel in weight or texture to it. The weight isn't the same as a genuine bill.” You can also use a counterfeit detection marker on the bill, and you can get those from office supply stores.
If you do run into the counterfeit money, contact the police, or alert the Secret Service. You can find them online at www.secretservice.gov.
