One of Wisconsin’s most legendary criminals was born 108 years ago today.
MANITOWISH WATERS, WI (WTAQ) - Bank robber John Dillinger was Public Enemy Number-One in the 1930’s.
He made his mark throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Among other things, Dillinger was involved in a famous shoot-out at a resort in Manitowish Waters in Vilas County in 1934.
He was killed later that year in Chicago.
Dillinger’s crime spree was the subject of the 2009 film “Public Enemies.” Johnny Depp played Dillinger. And part of the movie was filmed in Wisconsin – including that Vilas County hideaway at the Little Bohemia resort, where the actual bullet holes from the shootout can still be seen inside the building.
