STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) – The state Department of Natural Resources has banned fishing on the McDill Pond in Stevens Point until further notice.
The agency issued the notice Thursday because the McDill Dam is leaking and being drawn down so crews can assess the damage. The drawdown is stressing game fish and has made them vulernable to predation and fishing pressure.
The closure affects the entire lake, from County Highway HH upstream to Highway 10, and includes Iverson Park.
DNR staff will hold a public meeting on the closure from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Portage County annex.
“The drawdown comes at an inopportune time for a recovery fishery,” the DNR said in a statement. The agency has been working to restock the dam after it was drawn down in 2008 and again in 2009. That drawdown continued into early 2010.
