Calgary Flames' Tanguay celebrates scoring a goal past Colorado Avalanche in their NHL hockey game in Denver

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - The Calgary Flames have sent veteran defenseman Robyn Regehr to the Buffalo Sabres in a multi-player trade and signed Alex Tanguay to a five-year, $17.5 million contract extension, the team said on Saturday.

Tanguay, who was a potential unrestricted free agent, agreed the deal after a season containing a team-high 47 assists and 22 goals.

The forward also helped sniper Jarome Iginla finish third in NHL goals scored last season with 43.

Calgary, which also sent former Sabres forward Ales Kotalik to Buffalo and a second-round draft pick in 2012 as part of the Regehr trade, received defenseman Chris Butler and center Paul Byron in return.

The 31-year-old Regehr, who spent his first 11 NHL seasons with the Flames and waived his no-trade clause, had 17 points in 79 games last season.

Czech Kotalik, who returns to the team where he spent his first six and a half seasons, had six points in 26 games.

The 24-year-old Butler had nine points in 49 games for Buffalo last season while Byron, 22, registered two points in eight games.
