WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple has vetoed the City Council's decision Tuesday night to name the downtown green space as “City Square.”
The Council voted 7 to 3 in favor of “City Square.”
The Council vote “undermines the public survey that was taken,” Tipple said in a veto statement, referring to a vote last month in which 59 percent of area residents preferred “400 block” over nine other finalists. Only 21 percent supported “City Square,” according to the final tally.
The City Council will decide March 22nd whether to override the mayor's veto. It will take two thirds of all members or eight aldermen to reverse the mayor's decision.
