Carlos Guillen and Joel Zumaya will begin the regular season at the Tigertown complex in Lakeland. The Tigers announced yesterday that both will require further injury rehab work and will be left off Detroit’s opening day roster.
Guillen, who had hoped to start at second base, had micro-fracture surgery on his left knee last September. Zumaya’s injury plagued career has the flame-throwing reliever trying now to shake the effects of a nagging sore elbow.
In yesterday’s Grapefruit League action, there was a record Marchant Stadium crowd of 10,307 on hand in Lakeland to watch the Tigers lose 2-to-1 to the Boston Red Sox in ten innings. Miguel Cabrera had his 2nd homer of the spring for Detroit’s lone run. The Tiger’s Florida record is now 13-8.
