WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A former manager who stole more than $90,000 worth of gift cards from Eastbay will spend three months in the county jail and have to pay all of the money back.
Marathon County Judge Greg Grau also sentenced Ryan Stanley on Monday to five years probation. He must also write an apology letter to a former co-worker whose password he used to activate the gift cards. Stanley will have work release privilegs while in jail. He must begin serving his sentence within a month.
“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Stanley said in front of a small group of family and friends. “This is no one's fault but my own.”
Stanley admitted stealing the money to pay off some medical and credit card bills. He has since filed for bankruptcy to erase some of the debts and told Grau that he can pay about $300 a month in restitution.
“It will not be easy to do. But it is the right thing to do.”
Prosecutors had lobbied for some jail time given the “tremendous amount” of money that Stanley took from the company.
“The defendant knew that stealing was wrong and had other options to deal with his financial problems,” said assistant district attorney Tamera Hansen.
