WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - A Wausau man accused of causing the death of his girlfriend in a weekend car fire was put on probation just three days before the incident. Online court records show that 23-year-old Brian Matt was placed on a year of probation last Thursday for battery and criminal damage -- and he was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. Early Sunday, Marathon County authorities said Matt could have felt too drunk to drive -- and he left his car along a county road near Wausau with the engine running. It later started on fire, and killed a 29-year-old woman inside the vehicle. Officials said they're waiting for dental records and a review of the remains before releasing the victim's name. Matt is being held in Marathon County Jail on possible charges of drunken homicide and violating a probation. But charges were not filed as of earlier today -- and an investigation continues.
