UW-Stevens Point to offer 'voter ID'-approved student cards

STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) UW-Stevens Point says it will begin issuing new student ID cards that meet the photo ID requirements at Wisconsin polling places.

Students who want the card for voter identification purposes can request one through the PointCard office on campus. The UWSP Student Government Association will cover the cost of the new ID.

Under the new photo ID rules, college student ID cards would be valid at the polls if they were issued after students showed approved documentation -- like a drivers license -- and if the ID was valid for less than two years. Currently no college IDs meet the requirements, but several schools are making changes so their IDs could be used at the polls.

The Government Accountability Board has backed away from an earlier decision where a special sticker could be put on existing student IDs once the new requirements are met.
