Pilot killed in crash avoided humber of homes after adjustment

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI (WTAQ) - A pilot killed in a Racine County plane crash is being called a hero this afternoon.

Mount Pleasant Police said 76-year-old Phillip Pines of suburban Chicago managed to avoid several sub-divisions as he crash-landed his single-engine plane last evening.

It came down in a field near the Roma Lodge in Mount Pleasant. But had the pilot not made a late adjustment, police said the plane could have crashed a quarter-mile away into a number of homes – possibly resulting in more injuries and deaths.

The Racine County medical examiner’s office is expected to perform an autopsy on Pines Wednesday morning.

Officials said the plane was heading north toward Milwaukee when it either lost power, or was about to lose power before it crashed.
