MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s largest company is about to open a car-battery recycling plant in South Carolina. Johnson Controls of Glendale is the world’s Number-One supplier of lead-acid auto batteries. And instead of buying lead from other sources, Johnson Controls decided to recycle old batteries and re-use the lead in them. The company spent 150-million-dollars on its new recycling center, and it’s expected to start operating this summer. It has 75 employees – and it’s projected to have 250 when it reaches full capacity. Johnson said construction of the South Carolina plant is almost finished, and manufacturing equipment is now being installed. Johnson Controls is Wisconsin’s largest company by sales. It opened a similar recycling plant in Mexico last year.
