SARATOGA, Wis (WSAU) Even though a mega-dairy proposal is being blocked by a zoning change and a moratorium on new building permits, the DNR held a public hearing on the proposal in Saratoga. An overflow crowd was on hand, mostly voicing opposition to the project.
Many people spoke about the high capacity wells the Golden Sands Dairy would require. There are concerns that groundwater levels would be lowered for other residents who are well-dependent. Other speakers wanted to know about manure spreading and pesticides that might be used by the farm.
Wysocki Farms proposed the 3500 cow dairy farm in July on 6000 acres off Highway 13. They're currently suing the Saratoga Town Board, claiming the zoning change and building-permit moratorium is illegal.
The DNR will take written comments on the environmental impact of the farm until September 21st.
