GAB board chair says think about how things used to be with political appointees

by

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The head of the state Government Accountability Board says lawmakers should remember the way things used to be, before going back to those days.

Senate GOP leader Scott Fitzgerald said Monday that he’ll try to replace the board’s retired judges with political appointees.

That’s how the Elections and Ethics boards used to operate before the Accountability Board replaced them in 2008.

The board’s current chairman, David Deininger, said lawmakers used to get frustrated when election rules were changed in the middle of the stream – depending on whether Democrats or Republicans were in charge. He said the same thing would happen again, if GOP lawmakers followed Fitzgerald’s advice.

Fitzgerald accused the board of favoring Democrats, especially during the recall elections over the past couple years. He said board members simply rubber-stamped what their staff members recommended.

Deininger said that’s not true – and he noted that the board overruled its staff on this year’s changes in the way voter registrations were accepted at the polls.
