Officials remind you to get your furnace inspected before cold sets in

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Local officials are reminding residents to get their heating systems checked in the wake of a wood stove fire that burned down a mobile home in the Town of Grant last week.

Grand Rapids Fire chief Donald Bohn reminds everyone that this is the season for heating fires. "Everyone needs to get their furnaces inspected and if they're using a stove, they should make sure it's safe before firing it up."

Office manager Kathryn DiPalma from Gilray Heating and Cooling in Wausau says your furnace needs an annual checkup each year from the installer. "There should be a little sticker with their name on it or a service record near the unit itself that has shown past service."

In addition, you should be cleaning or replacing your furnace's filter once a month while it's on. DiPalma says that will go up more if you also have central air. "The air from the A/C blows through that same filter." You also need to ensure that any flammable materials are at least 3 feet away from the furnace itself in order to keep stray sparks or flame for starting a serious house fire.
