Group hopes DNR changes Wolf management plan

RHINELANDER, WI (WXPR) - A spokesperson for the Timber Wolf Alliance hopes the inaugural wolf hunt in Wisconsin helps develop a new management plan for the animal.

A total of 117 wolves were taken during the hunt, 62 from trapping and the rest with firearms. If you factor in all of the wolf deaths in 2012, they include 57 killed by federal officials, 22 hit by vehicles, 18 killed by landowners and 9 killed illegally by hunters totalling 124 additional kills.

Radley Watkins from the Timber Wolf Alliance in Manitowish Waters says if you look at all wolf mortality and not just the wolves killed by hunting and trapping, about a quarter of the population has died.

The DNR estimated there were around 850 animals in 213 packs earlier this year.

Watkins says this first year should help the DNR put together a new management plan.  The state Natural Resources Board earlier this year asked the DNR to put together a new wolf management plan.
