Stave Cleared To Play, Phillips Will Start

LOS ANGELES, CA (WSAU) Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave (stah-vee) has been medically-cleared to return for Tuesday’s Rose Bowl. He’s been out since October 27th when he broke his left collarbone.

The Badgers say fifth-year senior Curt Phillips will still be the starter at quarterback against eighth-ranked Stanford. But offensive coordinator Matt Canada said there’s a chance that Stave will get in the game at times.

Stave, a freshman, had taken over for an ineffective Danny O’Brien. But after Stave got injured, Phillips has led the Badgers to a 2-and-2 mark. They crushed Indiana with Phillips at quarterback, as well as Nebraska in the Big Ten title game. His losses were both in overtime to Ohio State and Penn State.

Phillips has completed 36-of-65 passes this season for 457 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Stave completed 59-percent of his passes in seven games with 11-hundred-four yards, six touchdowns, and three picks. Stave admits he’s rusty, but he’ll do his best to be ready for Stanford.
