VESPER, Wis (WSAU) A black bear picked an unusual place to hibernate… in the pipe of a drainage tunnel in Wood County. Several people in Vesper noticed an animal's shiny eyes that were visible from a nearby road. They took a closer look and saw the sleeping bear.
The D-N-R says no one’s in immediate danger. Bears are light sleepers, but as also lethargic when they wake up during hibernation. There may be some concern in the spring – when the bear will be looking for food and a mate. Bears are generally afraid a humans and will try to avoid contact unless they’re threatened.
Black bears tend to hibernate about four months out of the year.
