Phoenix, Az (WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers crushed the Chicago Cubs 10-to-2 yesterday in a Cactus League exhibition in Mesa Arizona. Brewers’ left-hander Randy Wolf ended a streak of seven-and-two-thirds scoreless innings when he gave up his first two runs of the spring in the fourth inning. Wolf said he didn’t want a scoreless spring anyway, calling it the “kiss of death.” He said it’s good to get some runs out of the way before the games start for real. Wolf also had a good day at the plate. He singled twice in two at-bats and drove in a run.

Brewers’ catcher George Kottaras had two doubles and five R-B-I’s. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. The Cubs scored both their runs on three straight hits – doubles by Starlin Castro and Ian Stewart, and a single from Jeff Baker. Cubs’ starter Randy Wells pitched three scoreless innings. But Travis Wood only got one out when the Brewers scored six times in the fourth.

The Brewers are now 5-6-and-1 this spring, and they’ll play San Diego this afternoon.   Brewers’ reliever Juan Perez has been released from a Phoenix hospital, after he suffered a partially-collapsed left lung a week ago. Manager Ron Roenicke said the left-hander’s lung capacity is back to normal, so he left the hospital earlier than expected. Perez must stay inactive for about another week, to heal a place where a tube was inserted. Perez was sleeping when he felt his initial pain – and he has no idea why it happened. Also, back-up catcher Mike Rivera is out with a strained right hamstring. But Roenicke does not expect him to be out for too long.
