Absentee voting ends Friday afternoon

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  Absentee voting ends at the close of your local municipal clerk’s business hours Friday. That time varies, so it would be wise to go early if you plan to vote Friday. Stevens Point City Clerk John Moe says the law is different and the deadline has changed, making it impossible to stop in and vote Monday before the election.

Early and Absentee votes have been coming in to many municipalities at a steady pace.  John Moe says Stevens Point was averaging over 200 voters a day. Clerk Shirley Weinkauf in the Village of Weston says they have been steady with roughly 200 voters a day. Clerk Karen Swanson from the Village of Plover has also seen roughly 200 voters a day, and says the combination of in-person and mailed in absentee ballots adds considerable work and expense.

Moe says the good thing about people voting early is it helps eliminate lines and delays on election day.

Clerks have to follow a secure process to protect the absentee ballots and get them processed properly.  John Moe says ballots are secured in a ballot box until election day, then taken by two election officials to the polling place where the absentee voter would normally vote, and then the ballots are counted along with the rest of the ballots for the precinct on election day.
