Brewers Part Ways With "Tony Plush"

by

MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Nyjer Morgan’s time in Milwaukee is done. The Brewers out-righted the 32-year-old veteran outfielder to Triple-“A” Nashville yesterday. Morgan cleared waivers, and he expects to become a free agent today.

By out-righting him, the Brewers can still negotiate a deal for 2013 – but assistant general manager Gord Ash says it’s not likely. Morgan became a fan favorite last year when he hit .304, put on a flashy “Tony Plush” alter ego, and had the game-winning hit when the Brewers won their first playoff series since 1982. But Morgan fell on hard times this season, batting just .239 as Milwaukee missed the playoffs. And Morgan set a Major League record by not having an R-B-I in 138 consecutive plate appearances.

Also, the Brewers say reliever Jose Veras has declined an outright assignment to Triple-“A,” and he’s becoming a free agent. He had 40 walks last season, marring an otherwise acceptable 5-and-4 record and three-point-six-three E-R-A in 72 appearances.

Free agents can start signing with other teams at 11 tonight. And general manager Doug Melvin again struck down reports that the Brewers will pursue Texas slugger Josh Hamilton. Hamilton has close ties with Milwaukee hitting coach Johnny Narron – but Melvin says the Brewers probably can’t afford him.
