Marquette's Mayo Ineligble

MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Marquette men’s guard Todd Mayo has been ruled academically ineligible. Coach Buzz Williams says the sophomore will be out indefinitely, and will not practice or play with the Golden Eagles.

Todd Mayo – brother of N-B-A player O-J Mayo – played well at the start of last season, but his performance declined during Big East Conference play. He averaged close to eight points and three rebounds a game in his freshman year.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said teammates and others considered Mayo as being too selfish, partially because of his brother’s basketball success. Mayo told the paper last month that he regretted not being closer to Williams last season. He said he confided in three of Williams’ assistants – all of whom have since left Marquette. Williams sent Mayo back to his Virginia home this summer – and Mayo said he texted Williams each day, and vowed to be a better teammate.

With Mayo’s loss, Marquette could be short on depth at guard. The Eagles plan to start three guards in Friday night’s Carrier Classic game against Ohio State – Trent Lockett, Vander Blue, and Junior Cadougan.
