LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ) - Two men will spend 35 years in prison for the shooting death of a 20-year-old La Crosse woman.
Kong Vue and his uncle Pao Vue must also spend 20 years under extended supervision once they’re no longer behind bars.
Both pleaded guilty this summer to reduced charges of reckless homicide. They escaped possible life sentences by striking a plea deal.
Kong Vue said he panicked when he entered an unlocked apartment to steal a purse – and he claimed to shoot Sara Hougom by accident. He said he didn’t know Hougom was in her apartment until he saw her sitting on a couch.
Pao Vue drove the getaway car, and was found to be just as responsible for the slaying.
Just hours before, the two men fired bullets at the home of an 83-year-old woman in La Crosse who was celebrating her birthday with relatives at the time.
