MARSHFIELD, WI  (WSAU)  -  Some new displays honoring our veterans will open in Marshfield as part of the city’s Veterans Day observance.  The public can get their first look between Noon and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Thomas House History Center, located on the corner of Central Avenue and Veterans Parkway in downtown Marshfield.

The new displays are part of the “Lest We Forget” exhibit, and Shirley Mook from Marshfield’s Historic Preservation Association says, “We’ve taken a whole room and devoted it to the European Theater of Operations. in that room we have D-Day, Omaha Beach, and the Battle of the Bulge.”

Marshfield’s role in times of war is the focus of several of the displays, including a Fallen Soldier Memorial honoring local men who have given their lives, such as Joe Altmann who perished in Afghanistan on Christmas Day. Another of the new displays remembers the role of gliders in World War II, because Mook says 60% of the plywood used to build the gliders was produced by Roddis Plywood Corporation of Marshfield as part of the country’s war-effort.
