Economic hiccups may be reason stores will open for Black Friday on Thanksgiving

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - For many stores, Black Friday will stretch backward into Thanksgiving Night.

And Madison College business and marketing instructor Betty Hurd says one reason is the latest hiccups in the economy. She says that three-fourths of shoppers will use cash and debit cards – so when the money’s gone, it’s gone.

As a result, Hurd says retailers are offering more deals at earlier hours, with the goal of getting first dibs on customers, for a much-needed boost in their business.

Also, Hurd believes stores will offer more bargains to attract shoppers on Saturday and Sunday – which normally aren’t as busy.

A number of store employees have cried foul about having to work on Thanksgiving, and some people agree. Still, Hurd says it can be argued that shopping provides good family togetherness.

Some stores still believe it can wait until Friday. A number of TV viewers saw an ad during Sunday’s Packer game in which Mills Fleet Farm emphatically made the point that it would be closed on Thanksgiving – and that it’s important for employees to be with their families on that day.
