MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The DNR confirmed that Wisconsin deer hunters did better than a year ago during the opening weekend of the gun season.

The agency released a preliminary total of 134,772 deer taken Saturday and Sunday. That’s a 19% increase from a year ago.

Wildlife management bureau director Tom Hauge says the final totals from the weekend should be bigger, once all the registrations are entered into the state’s data-base.

Hauge said the early numbers were bigger in all regions of Wisconsin – and part of it was because hunters wanted to their register their deer as soon as they could, due to the warm weather.

Other observers said the mating season had deer moving more actively than normal. Hauge also said the warmer temperatures allowed many hunters to stay in the woods longer than they otherwise might have.

At least three deaths have been attributed to the deer hunt so far, including a shooting death at Fort McCoy – the first such gunshot death in three years in the Badger State.

The current gun season runs through Sunday.
