MADISON, WI (WSAU) - A Wisconsin employer is being fined by the state after closing a Mosinee production plant. Schield Family Brands closed SNE in Mosinee laying off hundreds of employees. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development now says SNE didn’t notify take proper steps to notify the city’s mayor of mass layoffs with at least 60-days notice. DWD officials say the company violated business law and that 109 former SNE employees are entitled to split $319,335.91 in benefits and wages. SNE will also have to pay an additional $30,000 fine for not notifying Mosinee’s mayor of the impending mass layoffs.
SNE’s legal counselor Brandon Brunner says the state’s findings are incorrect, and he has filed an appeal. That appeal process will take time, meaning none of the 109 employees affected should expect a check until the litigation is over.
The Schield Family Cos. include Weather Shield Manufacturing, SNE Enterprises and Peachtree Doors, including the Visions and Crestline brand names. The Medford based company operates manufacturing plants in Medford, Ladysmith and Park Falls. They have closed plants in Mosinee Wisconsin, Huntington, West Virginia, Douglasville Georgia, and Logan Utah.
