Manawa sand mine is sandbagged for now

MANAWA, WI (WSAU) -  A proposed sand mine in Waupaca County is on hold.

The proposed Town of Union mine north of Manawa left the County’s Planning and Zoning Committee members without clear answers to some big questions. They sent the proposal back to the Town Board, hoping to get clarification about residential property buffer zone distances. The mine is proposed by the A.F. Gelhar company, which plans to supply sand to Waupaca Foundry. If the mine is built on the 160 acre parcel, it would add about 30 jobs to the local economy. It’s unknown if or when the issue will come back before the county’s Planning and Zoning Committee. To be built, it will have to go through them.

Several area residents and the Fox Valley Sierra Group are opposed to the mine, since it is next to Tellock’s Hill Natural Area and only a couple of miles from the Little Wolf River.
