WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - A program that funds removing blighted city properties in Wisconsin is being expanded. Department of Financial Institutions Secretary Peter Bildsten said, “DFI is pleased to be able to add a little more financial muscle to this innovative program,”
The first blighted house to be torn down using this program was about a month ago in Wausau. 10 Wisconsin cities were awarded grants totaling just over $900,000. The program is funded by Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions and the Wisconsin Department of Justice with proceeds both agencies received from the National Mortgage Settlement earlier this year. Now, another $118,666 has been added to the fund from non-mortgage related settlements.
Wausau will receive a total of $45,000 to remove three houses. The cities of Eau Claire, Mauston, Merrill, Oconomowoc, Portage, and Oconto County are the other participants in the program.
