WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - The statistics are in on the most recent Drug Take Back Day, held September 29th. The nationwide event had collection sites in every county to help get old or unwanted drugs out of homes and prevent them from getting into landfills and water supplies.
Marathon County Solid Waste Director Meleesa Johnson says their five collection sites received over one-thousand pounds of pharmaceuticals that day.
Nationwide, over 244 tons of prescription medications were collected in this fifth Drug Take Back Day. Since the first one in 2010, more than two million pounds of drugs have been kept out of landfills, septic systems, and municipal sewage systems with this program.
