WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Wausau is changing the way you license your dogs and cats. City Council Tuesday night voted to contract with PetData Inc. to handle licenses for pets. The new system will take effect with the 2013 dog and cat licenses, and is much easier for residents and generates a more accurate pet population count and license revenue to pay for animal issues within the city.

Alderman Keene Winters says the PetData system helps Wausau and Weston gather real data about pets to help with future policy decisions.  Wausau and Weston are working together on the PetData sign-up. Alderman Keene Winters says the two municipalities have common pet issues this can solve.

Alderman Lisa Rasmussen says this new system not only allows dog and cat owners to register pets 24-hours a day any day, but it allows registration of more than two dogs.   She says registering all of your pets is important, even if you currently exceed Wausau's two-dog limit.

PetData Inc. will also be able to follow up with reminders for licensing or required vaccinations, and can be set up so veterinarians may input vaccination records or sell licenses. The new system is guaranteed to save pet owners extra trips to city hall or the vet to take care of licenses.

Wausau and Weston are currently working on coordinating their pet licensing ordinances. Here is what is proposed:

License Fee - Spayed or Neutered Stays $10.00 in both communitiesLicense Fee - Unaltered Cat or Dog Weston adopts Wausau’s $20.00 feeLate Payment Fees Wausau adopts Weston’s practice of charging DOUBLE the license fee + the      Original feePayment Due Date Remains March 31st in both communitiesFine for Failure to Vaccinate Wausau likely to adopt Weston’s $290 fee (was $75)Pet Licensing Age Wausau to adopt Weston’s 4-month-old pet rule (was 5 mo.)

Wausau would also eliminate the Kennel Group Discount, since there are no kennels in Wausau and zoning forbids kennels in Wausau.
