Drought of 2012 keeps getting worse in Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Drought of 2012 keeps getting worse in Wisconsin.

The U.S. Drought Monitor said today that 87 percent of the state’s land area has moderate to extreme drought conditions. That’s up from 78 percent a week ago.

Two-thirds of the 48 mainland states are still in some form of drought, as farmers complete a corn harvest that’s getting smaller.

Thursday, the USDA reduced its estimate of the corn harvest to 10.71 billion bushels, down from 10.73 billion in September. The average yield is 122 bushels an acre, almost a full bushel less than July’s projection.

The only part of Wisconsin that’s not in a drought is the Door County Peninsula – and the same was true a week ago.

The lowest category – abnormally dry – is now limited to far northwest Wisconsin and a small section from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay.

Extreme drought conditions remain in far southern Wisconsin – plus a small part of west central Wisconsin from Black River Falls to Adams-Friendship. Otherwise, much of the eastern half of the state is in a moderate drought, while most of the western half is in a severe drought.
