WAUSAU, Wisc (WSAU) A man drove his car off a 150-foot embankment on Thomas Street in Wausau. A police report say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
It happened while the man was at the Marathon County Credit Union. He apparently hit the gas instead of the brakes, and drove down the embankment behind the credit union offices. The Wisconsin River lies at the bottom of the steep incline.
Firefighters tried to use ropes and a basket to rescue the man. Eventually he was pulled to safety by boat.
His name hasn't been released. He was taken to Wausau Aspirus Hospital for treatment, and then will be charged with OWI.
