WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -
Two Friday fires kept fire departments busy at the same time northeast of Wausau. One of the fires was in the Town of Texas at 2601 Paradise Lane, where a barn full of old hay burned. Texas Fire Chief Milton Schultz says there were no animals affected because the property owner was cleaning out the old barn and preparing to tear it down. Schultz says their main objective was to protect the nearby structures since embers from the blaze were starting grass fires hundreds of feet from the burning barn. "In these conditions, it's so dry, it was windy today, low humidity, so it escalated very fast."
The other fire was at H11379 School Road, where hay inside of a shed caught fire. Town of Hewitt Fire Chief Robin Siikarla says damage was minimal here. "He's going to lose a lot of hay here because it's basicly a lot of wetness on it, otherwise the building's in good shape yet."
This fire started when the farmer was blowing in bedding, but the exact cause is unknown.
The two fires started just after 3:30 p.m.
