DNR: Wolf hunters have bagged 1/6 of available quota

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s first wolf hunters have taken just over one-sixth of their available quota.

The DNR said 20 grey wolves were shot through Tuesday.

Twelve of those animals were killed in far northern Wisconsin. The state’s inaugural wolf hunt began October 15th – and two animal rights’ groups have filed a notice of a possible lawsuit to stop the wolf season, and put the animals back under federal protections.

A second legal case resulted in hunters proceeding without the use of dogs to track down the wolves.

As of now, the wolf season continues through the end of February – or until the statewide quota of 116 is reached.

The various management zones have their own quotas, and the hunt will end in those places once the local quotas are reached. Only 3 more wolves are available in the mid-northeast zone, where two have been taken already.
